Camping in the Left Lane | Legal or Not So Much?

“Camping in the left lane” usually describes a driver who remains in the far-left lane without passing or moving over for faster traffic, sometimes traveling at or below the speed limit while traffic piles up behind them. Charlotte drivers know the species well.

You may encounter one heading north on I-77 toward Huntersville and Lake Norman, moving steadily along at 64 mph beside another vehicle traveling 64 mph in the next lane, apparently unaware that a small civilization has developed behind them.

It is annoying. It can impede traffic. Under some circumstances, it can violate North Carolina law. But here is where the subject becomes more interesting than another complaint about bad driving.

License Points vs Insurance Points for Traffic Tickets in North Carolina

Traffic tickets in NC, especially if they’re considered moving violations, are often assigned a specific point value. License Points vs Insurance Points can be a big deal, depending on the type and severity of the traffic ticket. . .and if you’re convicted – Bill Powers

Insurance points are not necessarily the same as motor vehicle points, although for NC traffic tickets, they’re related at least in part. It’s also true that the amount of points issued are not always exactly equal. So for something like passing a stopped school bus ticket, it’s important to consider how the “points” could affect your driver’s license in North Carolina and your insurance premiums.
