Practice Areas

We’re litigators, dedicated to hard work, compassion, and meeting you at your point of need.

Our law firm values trial skills, courtroom advocacy, and the dogged pursuit of justice. Indeed, Bill Powers, senior attorney at the firm, is a former President of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ.com).

Our firm seeks to embody the guiding principles of NCAJ, a nonpartisan association of legal professionals “dedicated to protecting people’s rights through community, education, and advocacy.”

Just like the members who comprise NCAJ, our lawyers provide legal services across a wide range of practice groups to many different types of clients.

We focus on the needs of the particular client, rather than where we sit in the courtroom. Effective legal representation begins with a willingness, and ability, to take a matter to trial if necessary.

Sound legal advice is predicated on experience, as much as training. Lawyers who have argued a motion, picked a jury, and seen both successes and losses at trial are better able to explain the realities of the legal system to clients.

“The best lawyers I know can argue either side of a case. Indeed, that’s a flat-out smart way to prepare for trial: Anticipate the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent.”

– Bill Powers

That’s one reason we encourage our lawyers to cross-train in different aspects of the law. We want well-rounded attorneys with a wide range of experience.

It’s also why Bill Powers has spent more than two decades focusing his professional life on quality continuing legal education, advocacy, and making attorneys better at what they do.

What Type of Lawyer are You?

As stated, we encourage our lawyers to think outside the box, focusing on courtroom advocacy and compassion, rather than a specific practice-group or even jurisdiction. That’s another reason why we travel extensively throughout both North Carolina and South Carolina.

We enjoy the practice of law. It’s intellectually stimulating and rewarding to us. We’re interested in interesting cases and helping people in need. And we thrive on the competitive spirit and professionalism.

Those are some of the reasons we have a company car and a willingness to travel to help people with challenging, if not difficult legal matters.

“If you call yourself a courtroom lawyer, you better be willing to go to court to resolve legal disputes. If we say, ‘We’ll see you in court,’ we mean it.”

– Bill Powers

Experienced litigators also tend to be good negotiators. They know the value of a claim, as well as the likelihood of success (or failure) at trial.

Our legal advice centers on the best interests of the client and an honest, realistic assessment of your case.

We share the best-case and worst-case scenarios with clients. And while we always seek to serve with kindness, we have opinions.

We share what we think, always remembering our firm motto: It’s nice to be nice.

Types of Legal Representation – A Starting PointDo You Have Lawyers Near Me?

If you live in either North Carolina or South Carolina, one of our lawyers is likely available to answer some general questions, provide a legal consultation, and possibly serve as legal counsel as may be appropriate.

Our law firm is based in the Charlotte-Metro region.

We travel extensively throughout the Carolinas, helping people.

“I haven’t practiced law in every jurisdiction in North Carolina, but I’ve certainly argued cases in a lot of different places. I love traveling throughout the state, helping people. It’s a wonderful place to serve as an attorney.”

– Bill Powers

As you might imagine, a fair number of legal matters cross both county lines (and judicial districts) and even the NC-SC state line. Because of that, we also have an attorney at the firm who is licensed to practice in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

His name is Chris Beddow. He’s responsible for all the legal matters across the border in South Carolina.

Who are Your Clients?

We like to focus on the legal matter, not necessarily who you are as a client. We understand everyone deserves justice. So, there isn’t necessarily one type or typical client. We serve people in need.

In family law cases, we don’t limit ourselves in representing either the father or mother, or handling just custody cases or support. If you’re facing separation and divorce, we’ll help either party to litigation.

Clearly in criminal charges we represent only the accused, but it doesn’t matter if you have a felony or misdemeanor charge or a DWI in NC or DUI in South Carolina.

Similarly, we only represent people hurt due to the negligence of others.

As such, we never serve as legal counsel to insurance companies. It’s not who we are.

Those are not the interests we want to represent. As such, we only bring claims in injury cases on behalf of the plaintiff.

We proudly call ourselves Accident Lawyers and Criminal Lawyers.

Our goal is to help our clients through difficult times and complex legal matters, irrespective of what clients look like.

We want to provide the compassionate legal representation you deserve. We represent clients from all walks of life, across the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.

We truly understand how bad things can happen to good people. Our job is to stand by your side, literally sometimes in court, and walk you through what can be a an extremely complicated, if not confusing legal system.

We believe our clients deserve empathetic, respectful legal representation, regardless of any mistake you may have made, irrespective of how bad that mistake may have been.

We will vigorously protect your legal rights, serve as your legal advocate and listening ear.

I am so fortunate to have had Bill Powers on my case. Upon our first meeting, Bill insisted that through the emotions of anger, sadness, confusion, and betrayal that I remain resilient. Bill Powers and his firm were a true blessing. If anyone is contacting an attorney, it's more than likely not from a positive life experience. If there was a rating for "bedside manner" for lawyers he'd get a 10/10 for that as well. The entire staff were helpful... K.C.

Bill Powers’ staff has handled several traffic citations for me over the years, and they exceeded my expectations each and every time. Would highly recommend anyone faced with a traffic citation or court case contact his office and they will handle it from there. M.C.
★★★★★
Bill and his staff are flat out great. I (unfortunately) was a repeat customer after a string of tickets. These guys not only took care of the initial ticket for me, but went the extra mile and reduced my problems from 3 to just 1 (very minor one) on the same day I called back! I would recommend them to anyone. A.R.
